Keys to the City of Brisbane.
This Lord Mayor’s acknowledgement of Bushfire Relief Heroes belongs to everyone.

What Does the Key Actually Open?
After receiving the Keys to the City of Brisbane, I asked Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner an obvious question.
“What does the key actually open?”
It was March 2020. COVID had arrived and Australia was in the middle of a toilet paper shortage.
Without missing a beat, the Lord Mayor replied:
“There’s a storeroom in the basement full of toilet paper.”
Probably the most valuable thing in Brisbane at the time.
Behind that light moment sat one of Australia’s biggest disasters.
The Keys to the City had been awarded following the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires.
More than 24 million hectares burned. Thousands of homes were destroyed, and 33 people lost their lives. The smoke was so vast it could be seen from space.
Thousands of people stepped forward to help.
The beautifully framed key may hang on my office wall, but it doesn’t belong to me.
Recognition is rarely about the person standing on the stage.
It’s about the people who stepped forward together when they were needed most.
This key belongs to everyone who played a part in the Black Summer fires.
Let's Talk.
Some people come to us knowing exactly what they need. Others come with a problem. Either is fine. We'd rather talk early than late.
